Healthy Eating Strategies during the Holidays

ThanksgivingFeast

The holidays are right upon us which means family dinners, office parties, and gatherings with friends—all which involve food. Statistics show that if you are of normal weight (BMI under 25) you will typically gain about 0.8 lbs between Thanksgiving and Christmas. The overweight or obese American (BMI 25 and over) typically gains 2-3 lbs over the same period. Holiday weight gain contributes to about half of the pounds the average American puts on every year. So, here are some strategies for protecting your waistline and ensuring that you don’t become part of these statistics.

  • Be realistic. Yes, you can still lose weight during the holidays if you are super disciplined, but a more realistic goal may be to strive to maintain your current weight.
  • Plan time for exercise. Not only will exercise help to burn off those extra calories, but it is a great stress reliever.
  • Don’t skip meals. If you are headed to a family dinner or office party, don’t save up for it by skipping meals earlier in the day. Eat as you normally would and have a light snack before you leave so that you will be less tempted to overindulge.
  • Be strategic at dinners and buffets. Survey the dinner/buffet table and all its offerings and choose your favorites while skipping your least favorites. Use a smaller plate to help reduce consumption.
  • Be a mindful eater. Enjoy your food and how it makes you feel. Eat until you’re full and satisfied, not stuffed. For more information go to http://www.huffingtonpost.com/dr-susan-albers/mindful-eating_b_1265865.html
  • Be a responsible drinker. Alcohol is full of calories and the more you drink the less inhibitions you have which can lead to overeating.
  • Give yourself grace if you slip up. Stay positive and never throw in the towel.
