For many, the holiday season equates to busy, busy, busy.
From parties to holiday traditions and spending time with family and friends, the holidays are a season where you feel pulled in so many directions and you feel the pressure to get so much done that it is challenging to stick to your regular routines.
Not to mention, we celebrate these festivities with food. As a result, your exercise routines fall by the wayside.
However, this holiday season it doesn’t have to feel like all or nothing when it comes to staying active and fit.
A few simple adjustments can help you keep your exercise routine strong and your waistline slim.
Set Realistic Expectations
Undoubtedly, your schedule will need to adjust, but that doesn’t mean that you have to forgo exercise all together. Instead, accommodate your new schedule. Perhaps you can set a goal for how many minutes you want to be active each week, and plan that time into your schedule. Or, plan your exercise time to be earlier in the day prior to your holiday obligations.
Incorporate Exercise into Your Activities
Consider the traditions you enjoy during the holiday season and think of ways that you can be active during those activities. For example, if looking at the holiday lights is part of your family tradition, consider bundling up and walking to see the lights rather than driving. Making small adjustments to your regular traditions can be enjoyed by all members of your family.
Plan Ahead
If you are traveling or hosting guests this holiday season, plan ahead to ensure you have time to fit in your exercise routine. Going in with a plan gives you the power and motivation to stick to your plan instead of the “go with the flow” attitude that only hinders your ability to stick to your goal. Be sure to bring anything like your yoga mat, resistance bands, or your favorite exercise DVD and laptop with you.
